Top Cards from Assassin's Creed (ACR) for Cube

And just like that, we have moved past Modern Horizons 3 for Assassin's Creed.  I'm not a huge fan of the franchise and really only played the first when that came out, so I'm probably missing out on some quality games. I do prefer the Prince of Persia games way more as they are aesthetically more pleasing and the worlds they were set in fantastic. It'll probably never happen with WotC targetting millenials as their primary audience.

Fortunately for cube designers, we're only looking at a 100 card set vs the normal 250+. In addition, there are reprints that were intended to bring certain cards into modern. Really were just checking out 80 cards.

As this is a smaller set, we will be looking at less cards.

The List

Desmond Miles is an interesting card as initial glances will make you write it off as an assassin tribal card and dismiss it. In the bigger context of cube, however this card fills multiple functions and can scale with numerous other factors. The surveil on the card enables it to function as a graveyard filler while also quality controlling your upcoming draws. The ability is based on the damage dealt thus you can increase with equipment, enchantments, and counters in addition to just having assassins. And to top it off, the menace is already there to make him more evasive. He will scale in his playability as long as WotC continues to print assassins. If he isn't viable now, he might be in the future. Keep it in the maybe list for future references.

Senu, Keen Eyed Protector is possibly the best version of the flying 2/1 in white, competing directly with my current choice of Selfless Spirit. As long as you support legendary tribal, it is very real that you can constant abuse the tap effect to constantly keep scrying and gaining life. The quality this provides will have it triumph over other aggro decks and give the decks playing it a bit more longevity. Also being legendary is a huge bonus for Yoshimaru.

Distract the Guards seems nifty as I always wanted a Hordeling Outburst in white. Sadly, I think I don't have the space for it now. The free running is a bonus that makes the card better, though I don't know how many assassins you can play in white (as of this publishing it's just Layla Hassan that's also being printed in this set). If there's room, make it happen.

Yggdrasil, Rebirth Engine has a lot of potential. At minimum, it functions as a late game engine for creature decks to continue playing creatures and building back your board. Think of it as a longer lasting Mimic Vat. When taking into account its synergies, you have an artifact and a graveyard based card. Artifact decks in particular have graveyard elements already. Combining this with mana rocks and cards like Voltaic Key will get a strong engine going. This is a mana intensive card meaning the plays will be clunky initially, but once you get it going, you're winning. For slower cubes, this might be the right card for your value, grindy decks as currently there are cards that do similar things, but are more explosive.

The End Step

That pretty much wraps it up here. The color intensity of the cards clearly signals that this is more of a commander set rather than a modern set, though the cards are modern legal. I'll more than likely revisit this set within a year as many of these cards don't look good for 1v1 formats and I'm hoping someone much smarter than me comes along and teaches me why I'm wrong. Next stop, Bloomburrow.
